¥Basics--Debtor Files¥
Chapters 7∙11∙12∙13 is ideal for large practices and small,
handling up to 125 debtors at one time. If you need to add
more, you can periodically back up and erase the files in the
DATA subdirectory, and handle up to another 125 debtors.
The easiest way to accomplish the changeover is to create
your practice templates as soon as you install the program.
You should then save the contents of the DATA subdirectory
to another directory. Then, after you have backed up and erased
the 125 debtor files in the DATA subdirectory, you can copy
your practice templates back in and go right back to work.
■ ¥Managing Client Files¥
Client data files are stored in the \DATA directory. File
filename format is supplied name plus the extension .ZPS. For
example, a file saved with the name SMITH would appear in the
data directory as SMITH.ZPS. These files may be freely copied
to a floppy disk or to another part of your hard disk.
NOTE: These files may only be used if they are in the \DATA
directory. They may not be accessed from a floppy or another
directory.
These .ZPS files use a compression technique to compress all
the data into a very small file. This results in a considerable
savings of hard disk space. Whenever you access that client
file, the program automatically uncompresses the file, and
recompresses it after you have finished working on it.
¥Basics--Installation¥
■ ¥FILES Statement¥
Before using Chapters 7∙11∙12∙13, you will want to make sure that
your CONFIG.SYS files contains the statement: FILES=15. The number
should be 15 or greater.
■ ¥Working With a Network¥
If you encounter difficulties using the program when logged
onto a network, you may need to log off the network before
using the program. This is best done by rebooting your
computer and using the program without logging onto the
network.
¥Where the Program Is Installed¥
During installation, the program is installed in whatever
directory you specify. This "home" directory contains the
program files, as well as subdirectories containing fonts,
data, and other program files. The "home" director also
will contain the ALLCRED.LST document created when you have
chosen the all-creditor list.
The \DATA subdirectory is where all data files are stored.
This is the directory you'll want to periodically back up
to keep a record of client files.
■ ¥Compressed File Format¥
Data files are put in a compressed format so that
you can easily backup or transfer client files. The
client files have the extension .ZPS. Each .ZPS file
contains all files and information relating to a single
client answer file.
These files can be archived by saving them to a floppy
disk, although they cannot be used from a floppy disk.
The files can only be used by the program if they are
in the \DATA subdirectory on your hard disk.
Client files may be transferred to another computer hard
disk for use with a copy of Chapters 7∙11∙12∙13. The
transfer will only work, however, if the path to the
\DATA directory is identical: the same drive and program
directory name (usually \WEST).
■ ¥Disk Caching Program Advisable¥
Operations requiring considerable disk access, such as
sorting of creditor and asset databases, can be
substantially sped up if you have installed a disk
caching program. These programs are readily available,
and will speed up performance of many other of your
programs as well.
■ ¥Installing from the Desktop Practice Systems Menu¥
If you have already installed a module of West's Desktop
Practice Series, you may install any new module or update
directly from the start up menu. To do so, type DPS and
press ENTER to get the menu, then select "Install/Update a
Desktop Practice System."
You will then be asked for letter of the drive from which
the update or install disks will be accessed. The install
or upgrade will then begin, and you will be asked to confirm
the directory in which the program is to be installed and,
if this is an upgrade, you will be asked to confirm that you
wish to upgrade the program.
■ ¥Memory Requirements¥
The program requires a minimum of 540K of RAM. You will
be informed if your computer does not have enough memory
available when you attempt to start Chapters 7∙11∙12∙13.
If this happens, reconfigure your system to make more
memory available.
■ ¥Disk Space Requirements¥
Before the program can be run, there must be a minimum of
750K of free space on your hard disk. The program will check
for this free space each time you run it. If there is
insufficient free disk space, you will be notified how much
space you must free up for the program to run.
■ ¥QEMM Error When Printing¥
Some users who have installed QEMM version 6.0 or higher may
experience an error while printing. A message similar to the
following will appear at the top of the screen:
Fatal Error evm0009: EMM error: error = 8B, function = 5001
If this happens, you will need to add a statement to your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file to allocate memory for the printer drive.
The statement usually will be:
SET RTVMCONV=545,100
This statement sets the environment for the printer driver,
allocating up to 545 kilobytes for program functioning and
instructing it to leave 100K of memory free for forms and data.
If this statement does not fix the problem, you should replace
"545" with another number higher or lower (100 to 640) or change
the "100" to a larger number (up to the number allocated for
program less 100) until the problem ceases.
¥Changing Your Setup¥
■ "Printer Paper Feed" has been renamed "Paper Feed."
"Word Processor Path" has been renamed "Name and Path
to Word Processor." The printer port options also
include LPT3.
¥Editing Documents--Word Processor¥
■ ¥Always Accessible¥
The Edit Documents command may be accessed at all times,
even while you are in a graphical document. This makes your
word processor available at any time in case you wish to
create addenda or other related documents.
Please note, however, that you still may not edit the
contents of a graphical form (petition, schedules, etc.) using
the Edit Document command. If you need to edit the answers
printed on a graphical form, just select the form and change
whatever answer you wish.
■ ¥Filenames¥
When you use the Edit Document command, be sure to
save your document under your own file name. The Edit
Document command automatically names every document
"dps.txt." As a result, if you do not save the changed
document under a new name, it will be overwritten the
next time you use the Edit Document command.
■ ¥Formatting Codes¥
Some word processors do not honor this program's "center" code.
Be sure to check for flush-left headings when editing documents
created by the program.
¥Hardware Requirements¥
■ ¥Compatible Printers¥
Because Chapters 7∙11∙12∙13 produces exact replicas of the new
Official Forms, you will need a Hewlett-Packard LaserJet Series
II compatible laser printer. If you own a compatible printer,
make sure it is in the Hewlett-Packard mode.
■ ¥Required Memory¥
Chapters 7∙11∙12∙13 requires a minimum of 640K of memory.
¥Help¥
■ The Help titles have been changed from those listed in the User
Guide. The possible topics and their contents are discussed fully
in the On-Line User Guide.
¥ Keystrokes Summary--Data Entry¥
Keystrokes Summary--Data Entry contains all of the keystrokes
needed to complete data entry screens. Data entry screens are
used to enter multiple items for each property and claim type.
You are already familiar with most of the keystrokes used to

¥Menu--General¥
The print and save commands are not active when you are
entering data from the data entry screens. Once you leave
these screens, however, they will once again be active.
¥Printing Answers¥
■ When you wish to print "Answers," you do not need to
view the "Review Answers" screen before you select
"Print" from the Menu.
¥Printing Many Documents¥
Whenever you use the Print Many command, your document
selections will be saved by the program. The next time you
use the command, the same documents will be selected. If you
change your selections, this new set of documents will
become the default.
¥Printing To A File¥
■ Some word processors do not honor all of Chapters 7∙11∙12∙13's
formatting codes. Consequently, you may want to check
for the formatting changes described under "Editing
Documents in Your Word Processor."
¥Q&A--Data Entry¥
■ ¥Continuation Sheets¥
Chapters 7∙11∙12∙13 automatically creates continuation sheets
when the data supplied overflows the spaces on the forms.
The continuation sheets for each form are printed with the
appropriate caption and label.
If you need to supply additional information with a filing,
however, you must do so using your own forms and addenda.
When adding them, be sure to adjust the total number of sheets
on the Summary of Schedules as well as on any affected
schedules.
■ ¥Data Entry Screens¥
The Representative Data Entry Screen described in the
User Guide is now the Interested Party Entry Screen.
There is no requirement of specifying print location
for each party. Taxing authorities and other
government agencies who require notice may best be
entered in the Authorities question, accessible from
the matrix.
■ ¥Default Answers¥
Occasionally, you will find, upon reaching a question,
that an answer is being suggested. Often this will be the
result of your answers to previously asked questions when
filling out other forms. Sometimes, however, the program
will suggest an answer because there is a great likelihood
that most users will choose that answer.
Regardless of the source of the default answer, you may
overwrite the answer or erase the answer by pressing F2.
■ ¥Entering Dates¥
Dates must be entered in the MM/DD/YY format. Also,
two characters must be used to represent each month,
each day, and each year.
Examples:
"September" must be typed "09"
"the first of the month" must be typed "01"
■ ¥Entering Multi-Line Data¥
When entering addresses and other data in multi-line answer
blocks, you must press ENTER at the end of each line to get
to the next line. When you have reached the last line, pressing
ENTER will advance you to the next question.
■ ¥Table Entry¥
Many forms, such as the Petition and Statement of Financial
Affairs, have questions which allow entry of several similar
types of data. For example, you may have to enter one or more
gifts given by the debtor.
These questions are answered using table fields. When one of
these questions appears, you will see the question and comment,
and at the bottom of the screen will appear an answer area. To
fill in data, put information in the first blank, then press
ENTER. You will then move to the next blank line for data entry.
A total of three lines can appear at a time on the screen. If
a question has more than three parts, an indicator will appear
on the right side of the entry area showing that there are more
fields to fill. The next blank line will appear when you press
ENTER from the third line.
As an aid to answering the questions, a message will appear on
the status line at the bottom of the screen describing what
kind of information is being sought.
Each of these questions contains a message informing you of the
number of records permitted. To go to the next record, press F10.
When you are done entering records, press F10 twice to advance
to the next question. You may go to previous records by successively
pressing F9.
¥Using Chapters 7∙11∙12∙13 the First Time¥
The addition of the new Express Answer feature should alter the
way many have used this program, adding even more flexibility.
Express Answers allows users to answer all questions related to
the core filing forms (petition forms, schedules, matrix, etc.)
in a single session.
Instead of completing a filing form by form, you will now probably
want to use the Express Answer session to answer all questions
related to the core filing forms, and then, if needed, complete
any additional forms. Once you have answered the questions, you
may then use the Print Many command to print the entire filing.
You should be aware that, because the Express Answer session
encompasses the questions for an entire filing, it takes a few
seconds to start the session and save the answers.
¥Viewing Documents¥
■ To quickly return to the beginning of a document,
press HOME. To quickly go to the end of the document,
press END.
¥Word Processor Name and Path¥
■ To send Chapters 7∙11∙12∙13 documents to your word
processor, the program needs to know the full path
and file name for your word processor. You will be
asked to specify this during your first installation
of a Desktop Practice System.
Some examples follow:
C:\wp50\wp.exe
D:\wp51\wp.exe
F:\word\word.exe
■ If you do not know the path and file name for your
word processor, you may check with your system
administrator.
■ ¥Even if your computer does not have a word processor,¥
you may still use Chapters 7∙11∙12∙13 to create complete and
customized bankruptcy documents and to print them on
your printer. During installation, when prompted
for the "Name and Path to Word Processor," leave
the response line blank and press ENTER.
■ ¥Changing Name and Path to Word Processor¥
You may find it necessary or convenient to change
the designation for the word processor to be used
with your documents. This might happen if you
upgrade or change your word processing package or
if your computer has access to more than one word
processing package.
■ From the Menu, use the arrow keys to highlight
"Change setup" and press ENTER, or simply press C.
The "Setup Summary" screen will appear.
■ Use the arrow keys to select "Name and Path to Word
Processor."
■ Make the necessary modification.
■ When finished, press F10 or ENTER until the "Setup
Summary" screen disappears.
